Museum Assistant

The Kentville Historical Society is dedicated to inspiring curiosity and fostering a deeper understanding of the history of the Town of Kentville.  Through engaging exhibits and programming, we provide an enriching experience for visitors of all ages. Join us in our mission to promote the appreciation of the historical and cultural heritage of the Town of Kentville.

The Museum Assistant will support the museum with educational and public programming. They will assist with daily museum operations, planning initiatives and promotion, providing valued input in its development while gaining practical experience in the heritage sector.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the Board to plan & promote both the museum and public events
  • Participate in team meetings and contribute to the planning and execution of museum initiatives
  • Process archival materials, including inventoring and condition reporting
  • Respond to public inquiries and provide historical information to visitors and researchers
  • Provide excellent customer service, including providing tours
  • Support museum operations, including opening/closing procedures and general upkeep of exhibits and public spaces
  • Any related duties as required

Experience

  • Have a passion for history, education or museum studies
  • Experience with administrative tasks, including handling sales & donations
  • Experience in customer service, or visitor services is an asset
  • Contribute to social media postings
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skill, comfortable speaking to the public
  • Comfortable working both independently and as part of a small team
  • Be self-motivated, responsible, flexible, have a positive and professional attitude

Contract Length: 8 weeks, 35 hours per week

Language: English (fluent, both written & speaking) (required)

Work Location: In person at Kentville Historical Society, 66 Station Lane, Kentville, NS

Eligibility Requirements

  • Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada; (Note: Non-Canadian students holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent status are not eligible.);
  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada;
  • Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment;
  • Must be willing to commit to the full duration of the work assignment (30-35 hrs per week for 8 weeks)
  • Must not have another full-time job (over 30 hours a week) while employed though Canada Summer Jobs
